Power Cord Gauge Guide: 18 AWG vs 16 AWG vs 14 AWG and How to Choose

The gauge of a power cord — the thickness of its copper conductors — determines how much current it can safely carry and how far it can carry it. Choose too thin a cord and you risk overheating, voltage drop, and failed certifications. Choose too thick and you pay for copper you do not need. This guide explains how gauge works and how to pick the right one.

What AWG means

AWG (American Wire Gauge) is an inverse scale: the smaller the number, the thicker the wire. 18 AWG is thinner than 16 AWG, which is thinner than 14 AWG. The relationship is geometric — each three-gauge step roughly doubles or halves the cross-sectional area.

These ratings assume the standard PVC (SVT/SJT) cord construction with copper conductors. Cord length, ambient temperature, and continuous load all affect the practical limit.

Voltage drop: why length matters

Voltage drop is the hidden cost of long cords. A 20 ft 18 AWG cord carrying 10 A drops about 2.3 V — roughly 2% of line voltage, which is usually acceptable. But double the length and the drop doubles; combine a long cord with a thin gauge and sensitive equipment can malfunction.

The practical rules:

  • Under 6 ft (2 m): 18 AWG is fine for most devices up to 10 A
  • 6–15 ft (2–5 m): consider 16 AWG for loads above 7 A
  • Over 15 ft (5 m): step up one gauge for every significant length increase, especially for continuous loads
  • High-current devices (heaters, compressors, EV chargers): always use the gauge specified by the manufacturer — do not “save cost” with a thinner cord

Cord jacketing: SVT, SJT, SPT, and beyond

Gauge is only half the story — the jacket type defines the duty rating:

Most desktop electronics ship with 18 AWG SVT or SJT. Outdoor equipment should use SJOW/SJTW with the appropriate weather rating — a standard indoor cord will degrade quickly outdoors and is not certified for it.

Matching gauge to certification

In the US, cord sets are certified under UL 817 with the gauge, jacket, and plug configuration all listed on the certificate. A “UL Listed 18 AWG SVT 5-15P to C13” cord is a specific product with a specific file — you cannot substitute a different gauge or jacket under the same listing. When sourcing, the gauge and jacket on the certificate must match what you receive; this is one of the most common customs and inspection failures.

For the EU and other markets, the equivalent is conductor cross-section in mm² (0.75 mm² ≈ 18 AWG, 1.0 mm² ≈ 17 AWG, 1.5 mm² ≈ 15 AWG) per IEC/EN standards, with H05VV-F / H03VV-F jacketing families.
