Outdoor power cords face rain, dust, and puddles. The IP (Ingress Protection) rating is the standard way to describe how well an enclosure or connector resists solids and liquids. But IP44, IP65, and IP68 are not interchangeable — choosing the wrong one can leave equipment vulnerable.
How the IP Code Works
The IP code has two digits. The first digit rates protection against solid objects and dust, from 0 to 6. The second digit rates protection against liquids, from 0 to 8. A higher number means more protection, but each level has a specific meaning rather than a simple “better.”
IP44: Splash Protection
An IP44 rating means protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm and against splashing water from any direction. It is suitable for cords used under a covered patio, in a garage, or in light outdoor conditions where the cord will not be directly exposed to heavy rain or submersion.
IP65: Water-Jet Protection
An IP65 rating means the product is dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction. This is the rating to look for in cords and connectors used in exposed outdoor locations, workshops, and construction sites where equipment may be washed down or hit by rain.
IP68: Submersion Protection
An IP68 rating means dust-tight and protected against continuous immersion in water, with depth and duration specified by the manufacturer. It is intended for IP68 waterproof connectors that may sit in standing water or be buried. Note that IP68 does not automatically mean it handles high-pressure jets — each rating covers a specific scenario.
Matching the Rating to Your Environment
Choose IP44 for sheltered, occasional outdoor use; IP65 for exposed outdoor or wash-down environments; and IP68 for connectors that may be submerged. For cords that connect and disconnect outdoors, pay special attention to the connector sealing, since that is where water enters.
