1. Environmental protection
The source of the substitution of PVC materials is environmental protection. The environmental protection directives of various countries and famous brands are becoming more and more stringent. At present, the environmental protection directives we have contacted and fully complied with are RoHs/ REACH/ Halogen-free/ Phthalate/ Dimethyl Fumarate/ PFOA&PFOS/TBBPA/ PAHs/EN71, due to the development of material technology, some halogen-containing flame retardant TPU/TPE applications on the market are believed to be eliminated soon (typical products are Lubrizol FRTPU58202/SPC, APA FRTPE)
2. Hardness
The cable of consumer electronic products requires a soft and comfortable feel. For halogen-free flame retardant elastomers used in the cable industry, the hardness of 80-90A is more common. Too low stiffness can result in a loss of material elasticity and processing; too high stiffness can make the cable feel stiff. Elastomers have a unique elastic feel. Compared with PVC materials with the same hardness, the softness of the feel is deviated. In our experience, the halogen-free flame retardant elastomer of Shore 85A has similar softness to the finished PVC cable of 80-82A (55-50P).
3. Flame retardancy
The evaluation of the flame retardancy of the finished cable mainly refers to the VW-1 or FT-1 standard. It needs to be clear that the whole cable must be fireproof. Since different electronic information wires have different wire gauge designs, the material of the semi-finished insulating layer has been limited (choose from PP/PE or Hytrel materials). If flame retardant polyolefin materials are used, it will cause voltage breakdown or signal transmission defects . Therefore, the finished flame retardant cable puts forward very high flame retardant requirements for the external quilt material. In our experience, the outer covering material has strong flame retardant and coking ability. After the cable is burned, it adheres to the finished product to form a dense carbonized layer to protect the wire insulation material. Even if the semi-finished product is not protected by shielding materials (such as aluminum foil), it can easily pass through VW-1 or FT-1 fire test.
4. Physical and mechanical properties
In the UL1581/758/62 standard, the minimum tensile strength of elastomer or 105°C PVC material is 1.05kgf/mm2, and the minimum elongation at break is 100%. As our halogen-free flame retardant elastomer material, its mechanical properties have far exceeded the requirements of traditional PVC cables. The elongation of the outer covering material can be used as one of the reference indicators for the elasticity of the finished cable. We believe that the application of halogen-free flame retardant elastomers in the cable industry should pay more attention to the tensile strength, tear strength, temperature resistance grade (80/90/105°C), thermal deformation (121/150°C), cold and heat of the outer covering material. Impact, non-migration, etc., this can reflect the comprehensive performance of the material.
